We received the following information from the Dominican curia, Santa Sabina, Rome:
Members of the Dominican Family in Haiti include Friars of the Vicariate of Haiti (sponsored by the Province of Toulouse, France) and Sisters from six congregations (Monteils from France; Missionnaires Adoratrices from Canada; Présentation from Rome; Délivrande from France; Petites Soeurs from France; and Fátima from Puerto Rico). It seems that all Dominicans survived the earthquake although some were injured.
Specifically regarding the friars, Fray Manuel Rivero, O.P. Vicar of the Vicariate of Haiti, reported that the friars had been living in Port-Au-Prince in a section of a large institution called St. Rose of Lima, which was a school and also housed some French Sisters (not Dominicans). The building was destroyed in the earthquake. The Friars and Sisters survived.
[This year, 2010, Dominicans of the Americas began commemorating the 500-year anniversary of the arrival of Dominicans to the Americas. They arrived on Hispañola in 1510.]
