The theme of co-responsibility draws together shared leadership, lay-religious collaboration, synodality, governance, and the roles of major superiors, councilors and members of religious institutes. Often posited as an issue only of lay involvement, co-responsibility engages governance, management, mission, and challenges those in leadership to fully engage everyone into “the Church’s being and acting.”
As religious institutes explore how their charism will continue in a future with fewer religious and resources to continue traditional apostolates and ministries, there are places for greater collaboration with lay people, sponsored ministries, and others. This assembly will give leaders the opportunity to explore the fullness of a co-responsible future for their leadership teams, members, ministries, and charisms.

Dr. Hosffman Ospino

Assembly Session: Theological Underpinnings of Co-Responsibility
Dr. Hosffman Ospino is a native of Colombia where he pursued undergraduate studies in Philosophy. He holds an M.A. in theology with concentration in Church History and a Ph.D. in Theology and Education from Boston College. His research explores the dialogue between faith and culture and the impact of this interchange upon Catholic theological education, catechesis, and ministry. He has served as the principal investigator for several nationally recognized studies on how the Hispanic Catholic presence is transforming parishes, schools and organizations. He has authored and edited more than a dozen books. He is a frequent speaker at national and international events. He is actively involved in ministry and faith formation projects in various parts of the United States.

Assembly Session: A Conversation on Co-Responsibility
Nathalie Becquart is a French religious, member of the Institut La Xavière Missionnaire de Christ Jésus. She studied at the Jesuit Faculty of Centre Sèvres in Paris and specialized in ecclesiology with a research on synodality at Boston College School of Theology and Ministry. During 25 years she was involved in youth ministry and served as Director of the National Service for the Evangelization of Youth and Vocations of the French Bishops’ Conference from 2012 to 2018. She took part to the Synod on Youth as observer and became consultor to the General Secretariat of the Synod of Bishops. On February 6, 2021 she has been appointed by Pope Francis as Undersecretary of the Synod of Bishops and on December 2021 also as member of the Dicastery for Communication.

Assembly Session: Leadership & Co-Responsibility
Rev. Donald Senior, CP, is President Emeritus and Chancellor of Catholic Theological Union in Chicago (CTU), where he is also a member of the faculty as Professor of New Testament. Born in Philadelphia, he is a member of the Passionist Congregation and was ordained a priest in 1967. He received his doctorate in New Testament studies from the University of Louvain in Belgium in 1972, with advanced studies at Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati and Harvard University. He served as president of CTU for 23 years. He is a frequent lecturer and speaker throughout the United States and abroad, serves on numerous boards and commissions; and is actively involved in the interreligious dialogue, particularly with the Jewish and Muslim communities. Fr. Senior has published extensively on biblical topics, with numerous books and articles for both scholarly and popular audiences. He leads numerous study tours of the Middle East.

Brother Ernest Miller, FSC, D.Min., serves as Vice President of Mission, Diversity and Inclusion at La Salle University. He completed a Doctor of Ministry degree at the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago in May 2015. He was graduated from Loyola University New Orleans with a B.A. in Political Science; The Elliott School of International Affairs at the George Washington University with a M.A. in International Affairs; La Salle University with a M.A. in Education; and Georgetown University with a Master’s in Liberal Studies. A native of New Orleans, Brother Ernest is a member of the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools (FSC). He joined the De La Salle Brothers in 1993, in Philadelphia, to begin initial formation. In 2003, he made his final profession of vows in Washington, DC. In 2010, he was the Convener of the Lasallian Convocation on the Rights of the Child at the United Nations in New York. He is a Convenor of the Lasallian Higher Education Colloquy and serves on the Board of Trustees of Lewis University in Romeoville, Illinois, and Manhattan College in Bronx, New York.

Matt is a Professor of Practice in the Department of Management and Operations and the Faculty Director for the Center for Church Management in the Villanova University School of Business. In addition to overseeing the Center for Church Management, he teaches both undergraduate and graduate students in Organizational Management; Leadership Ethics and Catholic Social Thought; Team Leadership and Group Dynamics; and Pastoral Strategic Planning. Prior to joining Villanova, Matt was a Strategic Business Unit Director for the Franklin Mint and was responsible for a $100 million line of diecast collectible cars. He also spent 18 years with the Catholic Leadership Institute and served as President and CEO for 13 years, growing it from a local all-volunteer organization with $15,000 a year in revenue to an international leadership training and consulting organization with 26 full-time employees and $6.1 million in annual revenues. Matt has a BS in Economics from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania and an MS in Church Management from Villanova. He and his wife, Kerri, live outside of Philadelphia and have three children. In his free time, Matt enjoys running and has completed 8 marathons and an Ironman triathlon.

Father Kevin Storey, CSB, Superior General of the Congregation of St. Basil, strives to lead the Congregation with the same openness that initially attracted him to the Basilian Fathers. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1992 and has ministered in Rochester, NY and Houston, TX. He worked as a missionary in Colombia, South America from 2000-2004 before moving to Houston to teach Math at St. Thomas High School and in 2012 he was appointed president of St. Thomas High School. He was elected Superior General in 2018, and resides in Toronto where the Basilian Curial Office is located. He holds a Master of Divinity, a Master in Pastoral Counselling and a Master of Education. In his spare time he enjoys playing chess, hiking and swimming.

Prominent in the field of Catholic higher education, Fr. Holtschneider began his tenure as ACCU president on July 1, 2019. He served as president of DePaul University in Chicago, the nation’s largest Catholic university, from 2004 to 2017. A frequent speaker, consultant, and writer on issues facing colleges and universities, he has served on the boards of the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities, the American Council on Education, and ACCU, which he chaired from 2010 to 2012. He currently chairs the Niagara University Board of Trustees and the Institute of Advanced Catholic Studies at the University of Southern California.

Lincoln Snyder has served as NCEA President/CEO since July 2021. He previously served for more than six years as executive director of Catholic schools in the Diocese of Sacramento. Prior to his work for the diocese, Mr. Snyder worked as a teacher, board member and board chair for the De La Salle Christian Brothers, with whom he also completed leadership, board and lay partner formation. In addition to his work in education, he worked in international business for Can Pack SA in Krakow, Poland and the Middle East; and in commercial property management and development as vice president of Snyder Commercial Real Estate. A California native, Mr. Snyder is a graduate of Christian Brothers High School, Sacramento; the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in international politics, with a minor in German; and St. Mary’s University of Minnesota, where he earned a Master of Arts in Lasallian Leadership in conjunction with the Buttimer Institute of Lasallian Studies.

Susan M. Timoney received her Doctorate in Sacred Theology (STD) at the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas (The Angelicum) in 1997. She focused on Christian spirituality and the feminine dimension of discipleship. Following her studies, Susan served as vice-president of a lay education and formation program called Education for Parish Service which hosted programs in five dioceses in the United States and in the Archdiocese of Rome, Italy. Susan was appointed Assistant Secretary for Pastoral Ministry and Social Concerns for the Archdiocese of Washington in 2010 and served as Assistant Secretary and Secretary until her appointment as Associate Professor in 2018. Susan began teaching as a lecturer in 1998 in the undergraduate theology program and in 2016 was appointed an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the School of Theology and Religious Studies. Susan is a nationally and internationally recognized expert in the fields of evangelization and pastoral leadership serving on numerous board of directors including Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Washington, The Catholic Apostolate Center, The Dominican House of Studies, Washington DC, The Lay Centre at Foyer Unitas, Rome and the Catholic Information Center.

Fr. Frank Santucci OMI is originally from South Africa, where he became a Missionary Oblate of Mary Immaculate in 1970 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1976. He did further studies at the Claretianum Institute of Theology of Consecrated Life (Pontifical Lateran University) in Rome, where he obtained a licentiate and doctorate. He is the holder of the Kusenberger Chair of Oblate Studies at Oblate School of Theology, which has an academic and an ongoing formation outreach to the Missionary Oblates and Lay members of the Mazenodian Family throughout the world.

Anne Walsh is a native of St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. She works with the Redemptorists of Canada as a member of the Redemptorist Adult Faith Formation Team, and with the Redemptorists of North America as Director of Partnership in Mission. She is Chair of the Redemptorist General Commission for Partnership in Mission, serving in the Office of Partnership in Mission for the CSsR, and a member of the Redemptorist General Secretariat for Evangelization. Anne graduated from Memorial University of Newfoundland with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education (1982). She holds a Master’s in Religious Education from St. Michael’s College, Toronto (1994), a Diploma in Fine Arts from the University of Calgary (1990), and a Canadian Certificate in Youth Ministry Studies (1998). In 2016, Anne received her Doctor of Ministry degree from St. Stephen’s College at the University of Alberta. In addition to classroom teaching, Anne has worked in Campus Ministry, Youth Ministry, Religious Education, and Adult Faith Formation at the School Board, Parish and Diocesan levels.

Fr. David Muñoz, OMI, is a Missionary Oblate of Mary Immaculate currently serving as Pastor of Our Lady of San Juan de los Lagos Parish and Shrine in San Antonio, TX, as well as the assistant to the Chair of Oblate Studies at Oblate School of Theology. He was born in Puerto Rico and grew up in South Florida. He holds a degree in Christian Spirituality with a concentration in Oblate Spirituality and is currently working on a Doctor of Ministry.

Brother Kevin M. Griffith grew up in New Rochelle, N.Y., and graduated from Holy Family Grammar School (1975), Blessed Sacrament High School (1979) and Iona College (1983). He later earned an MA in Reading from Manhattan College (1988) and a D.Min. in Pastoral Studies with an emphasis on Heart-Centered Spirituality from the San Francisco Theological Seminary (2008) in San Anselmo, Calif. Kevin joined the Congregation of Christian Brothers in September 1979 as a first-year student at Iona College. After graduating from Iona with a BA in English in June 1983, Kevin began a 12-year teaching career. Following a year of study at St. Louis University (1996) in St. Louis, Mo., where he earned a Certificate in Religious Formation, Kevin became the director of Initial Formation for the Edmund Rice Christian Brothers, a role he held for 10 years. Kevin was first appointed to Province Leadership with the Christian Brothers in 2003, becoming deputy province leader in 2008. Since 2014, he has served as the Edmund Rice Christian Brothers North America Province Leader. At present, Kevin serves on the Praesidium Religious Accreditation Board in Arlington, Texas, and on the Iona College Board of Trustees. He is the President of the Conference of Major Superiors of Men in the United States.

Fr. Frank S. Donio, S.A.C., D.Min. is the Executive Director of the Conference of Major Superiors of Menand a member of the Society of the Catholic Apostolate (Pallottine Fathers and Brothers). He is also the Founding Director of the Catholic Apostolate Center. Fr. Frank is former Provincial Rector of the Immaculate Conception Province of the Society of the Catholic Apostolate. Fr. Frank writes and presents on evangelization, co-responsibility and collaboration in ministry and apostolate, pastoral planning, Church leadership and management, and Catholic and Pallottine spirituality. Pre-Assembly: Co-Responsibility in Charismatic Families
Monday, August 1, all day
Charismatic families give religious men and women, diocesan clergy, and lay people, the opportunity to collaborate in a unique way through living a charism. These families can be formed in formal and informal ways, with varying forms of cooperation. Members of charismatic families often share in formation, dialogue, and mutual service.
Join us for this day-long program, open to anyone who is interested, on building co-responsibility within the charismatic families. We will discuss the U.S. reality – including associate programs, shared formation opportunities, and canonical responsibilities. For more fruitful conversation, please invite leaders of associates programs, formators, mission leaders, and others interested in this topic.

Post-Assembly: Co-Responsibility in Councils
Friday, August 5, morning
The responsibilities of councils are primarily found in individual constitutions. And yet, there are best practices in co-responsibility that all leaders can learn. In this morning session, we will discuss how councils can guarantee real cooperation and participation of the members through co-responsible leadership. We will discuss how major superiors can effectively rely on their councils for support and how councils can provide leadership for other members of the community.
This workshop is intended for major superiors, councilors, and those with leadership responsibilities in institutes, societies, provinces, and abbeys.
