Fostering Cooperation and Mutual Support
Interamerican meetings of religious have been taking place since October of 1971, but they have taken on new importance as the church increasingly thinks of the hemisphere as a unity. The Interamerican Committee consists of the leadership of the Canadian Religious Conference (CRC-Canada), the Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR), the Conference of Major Superiors of Men (CMSM) and the Confederation of Religious of Latin America (CLAR). It meets regularly in the spring of the year to explore areas of cooperation and mutual support.
CMSM has a long tradition of collaboration in the area of justice and peace with the religious of Latin America. These contacts at the level of the conferences help further that effect as free trade, U.S. policy on drug trafficking, and the U.S. war on terrorism all create significant issues of international justice and peace for our regions. They are best handled collaboratively with the best "on the ground" knowledge from the religious in the countries involved as our CMSM Justice and Peace Office does its Washington-based work on U.S. policy.
