“Goodness, together with love, justice and solidarity, are not achieved once and for all; they have to be realized each day. It is not possible to settle for what was achieved in the past and complacently enjoy it, as if we could somehow disregard the fact that many of our brothers and sisters still endure situations that cry out for our attention” (Pope Francis, Fratelli Tutti, 11).

We as men religious are called to be in solidarity and fraternity, not simply with each other or in our communities, but with all. This is the path toward greater hope in our world. Some continue to act as if “we have always done it this way” or a mode of maintenance (cf. Evangelii Gaudium, 33) still works in both our communities and ministries. Yet, we know that such “complacency,” as Pope Francis calls it, is not what we are truly called to as “pilgrims of hope” in this Jubilee year and beyond. Instead, we are invited to “rejoice in hope” (Romans 12:12) through concreate actions that create a more just and peaceful Church and world. Such action occurs through deepening an authentic communal life. We can go forth as individuals, but this will not be lasting. Our communal action as Church and as men religious, discerned in the Holy Spirit, provides a way forward.

At our National Assembly in Baltimore this year, we will reflect on the theme “Rejoice in Hope: Solidarity and Fraternity.” We will discuss how we can live in a more hopeful way through greater solidarity and fraternity. We will also examine the concrete needs and concerns of today and ways in which men religious can address them. We hope that you will be able to join us in July.

In prayerful solidarity,

Frank Donio, SAC
