As we move more deeply into the Lenten season, how are we assisting our brothers in community in deepening their conversion in Christ? How are we doing that for ourselves? We know the usual practices of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving have as their end living life more deeply in Christ. Many religious communities have additional Lenten practices that are part of their traditions. We can go through the motions and move through Lent focused on other things or we can stop and be more intentional about what we are doing in serving God and others.

It is easy to get distracted by the many commitments of leadership. Stopping and considering how we can deepen our spiritual lives during the season of Lent can give us a renewed sense of what is central and what is not. Pope Francis in his Lenten message for this year offers us this consideration: “The Holy Spirit impels us not to remain self-absorbed, but to leave ourselves behind and keep walking towards God and our brothers and sisters.”

This Lent, may we “leave ourselves behind” and deepen our life in Christ and our love of others, particularly our brothers in community.

In prayerful solidarity,
