Have you ever experienced ingratitude from others? Leaders are expected to show gratitude for what others do, and we should. Experiencing ingratitude for one’s efforts is common for leaders, though. Leadership seen as service is the gratitude given for the work that is done well. That might seem strange, but our frame of reference in religious life is not what one receives from the other, but what one gives.
As the Thanksgiving holiday in the United States approaches, we have the opportunity to be in gratitude to God for our service to our brothers in community and also to be in special thanks for their service to the community and to the People of God. It is easy to bring problems to prayer, but do we take time to be thankful for the blessings that are part of community life, especially for the ability to serve?
May we take that time in this season and others so that our service is not about self, but more fully about others in the example of Christ.
